On Monday I wrote about my daily routine, specifically how I make time for the 12 hours of training I am doing each week in preparation for Comrades Marathon. On the surface, that seems like a lot of time. Let’s be honest: it is a lot of time! Thank goodness there are 168 hours in a week.
But if we assume I sleep 8 hours a night (sometimes more, occasionally less), that still leaves me with 112 hours per week to work, eat, spend time with friends and family, and exercise.
Your high school math teacher would have made it look like this:

Fancy, huh?
If you’re more persuaded by the written word, check out this letter posted to the Comrades Facebook group by one of my fellow runners:

And, finally, for those of you more of the, ahem, social sciences persuasion, there’s this car decal (spotted at a race in South Africa):

The reality is, preparing for a 90KM running race through difficult terrain and in potentially unfavorable weather does require a tremendous time investment. Fortunately for me, I love running. And I love the good-humored natures of many of my fellow runners. Some say we are an odd bunch, but we do know what we love.
See you in Durban!
