What to look for in a mom fitness program

Mom fitness isn’t the same thing as regular fitness.

Women who have given birth have a unique set of needs when it comes to exercise. Whether your baby is six weeks or six years old really doesn’t matter. Unless you do the work in the early days postpartum to deeply heal your body, you need to be mindful of how your body may react to exercise.

Starting with choosing the right types of exercises will increase the likelihood that your workouts are beneficial for your whole body. No one has time for mom to get injured!

When thinking about getting back into exercise after time off– like during late pregnancy and early postpartum days– being mindful of what your body has endured is key.

Questions to ask yourself before beginning a home exercise program:

  • Have I received medical clearance from my care provider to return to exercise?
  • Have I been checked for diastasis recti and prolapse?
  • How does my body feel when I raise my heartrate?
  • How do my pelvic organs react when I bear down for a bowel movement?

The answers to these questions will give you a good indication of whether or not your body is feeling ready for exercise.

If you’re able to answer the questions and feel positive about undertaking a new workout routine, you want to choose one that will support your recovery. (Again, even if it’s been years since you’ve given birth, you may have undiagnosed underlying issues to consider.)

Then there’s the whole I’m-taking-care-of-another-human-and-am-not-sleeping-a-lot thing.

This is where blindly choosing a Mom Fitness home exercise program from the internet can feel like a minefield.

Have you scrolled through Pinterest finding workouts to do at home, but it’s all so overwhelming?
